Healthy Bodies Healthy Business: The Magic Secret to De-Stress
Have you ever met someone who is juggling multiple things or multiple issues, and they seem calm, cool and collected? You think to yourself, how do they do that? You truly wish you knew the secret to their ability to peaceful existence. They must have a magic stress wand; they wave it, and it magically all goes away. I wish it were true, I would have invented it and I would now be a trillionaire.
Since the magic wand theory doesn’t add up, let’s discuss some of the facts. Life happens and stress is the result. If you expect that you can live your life with no stress, it will cause you more stress than the stress you already have. Another fact is we are hardwired to feel and react to stress. It’s part of our flight or fight response, handed down from our ancestors long ago.
Stress is our body’s response to any kind of demand. The causes are either physical, due to fear of something dangerous, or emotional, due to worry over anything that you can think of. The result is the same. The body reacts by releasing chemicals into the blood stream. It gives you more energy and strength. Now, that can be very healthy; you may need that in case it’s from physical danger. It can be unhealthy if it’s in response to something emotional, and there is no outlet for that energy or strength. Then it becomes a sneaky little devil. It begins to affect your body and your mind. You develop the habit of doing it to yourself. You now wish for that magic wand.
So let’s talk about what to do about Emotional Stress, the most challenging to master. The difference between you and the person who appears to have the magic wand is their perspective. You know their viewpoint, the lens with which they see the world. They have developed a healthy, balanced perspective of life, the ability to change, adapt and accept that stress happens. They recognize what they can control, and what they can’t.
You may be thinking you can’t do that. Yes you can. Here is my number one secret tool that I use with my clients, family, friends, myself and even in business. It’s laughter. Yes, chuckling, giggling, bubbling, snorting and hysterics is the easiest and cheapest way to gain a healthy perspective in any situation.
Laughter increases your breathing, lowers your blood pressure and releases endorphins in the brain that control pain and the feel good effect; your stress-related hormones decrease during laughter. Besides all this science stuff, in real life it eases the situation, you can gain a fresh perspective and it calms the body down and creates a healthy mindset. Voila – instant stress relief!
I am sure you want even more tools and resources, so come to the Healthy Bodies, Healthy Business event sponsored by Interconnections for Women and Virtua Healthcare on February 28, 2013. As an extra, added bonus, I will be there and you can speak to me in person.
